Our day at BITS Dubai

(Malini Mohan, Keerthi Jerome, Chippy Jerome)

It was after the annual exams when we had the holidays for two weeks. We were enjoying  the early morning sleep which normally extend till 11 o’ clock in the morning. No wonder our parents were thinking of ways to put an end to the morning sleep and TV days. One of those days, my mother came up with an idea of taking us to her college saying it is the talents day at the college. She promised to come and pick us up in the afternoon so that she 'll not disturb our morning sleep.

Mom came home at Around 1 o’clock in the noon and me and chippy were ready for the trip. We picked up Malini and proceeded towards BITS_PILANI DUBAI. We reached BPD at around 2 o’ clock. BPD is in Dubai International city around 35 km from our residence at Abu Shagara, Sharjah and it took around 35-40 minutes to reach the college.

Before going to the program hall, we planned to go for a campus tour as Malini was new to the campus. We visited the classrooms, laboratories, faculty rooms etc.. We even went to the library. They have a wonderful collection of books(not only technical but also literature). We borrowed some novels from the library in my mothers name and went to the canteen to have some snacks. There we really enjoyed the masala dosa in the canteen.

The auditorium was next to the canteen. The programs were started before 2 0’ clock. We got into the auditorium and managed to get some seats in the front of the stage . We found the people are enjoying group dance and band competition there to their maximum level(some of the clippings are attached below). The competition was pretty tight as each one was better than the other. The programs were too good and the students are really talented. We were very much excited to see the elders performing like true artists. Seeing the college in
a different mood altogether, we all wanted to become a part of the college too.

BPD was started with 60 students in two disciplines - Computer Science and Electrical & Electronic engineering. The very next year they started Electronics & Instrumentation too and  their growth was exceptional. Now they offer six B.E (Hons.) programs including Mechanical Engg, Chemical Engg and Bio-technology.  One important fact is that the curriculum is based on fully internal evaluation system. The grading is on 10 point CGPA relative grading. Now the student’s strength is around 1500. The facilities they offer include transportation, separate on campus hostels for boys and girls, on campus clinic, sports complex, well arranged library with good collection of books, well equiped laboratories and most importantly a full fledged canteen, a department store etc..
The program got over at around 7.00  in the late evening. We started from the college by 7:30 back to home. But it was a Thursday and hence we had to really taste the traffic situation in Emirates road and AL Wahda road spending more than one and a half hours to reach Rolla. Now we experienced the much talked about traffic situation in UAE too. My mother said this is quite normal traffic compared to the earlier situations. We dropped Malini to her home and came back home by 9:30 pm. It was a fantastic day fully engaged and we loved the trip very much.

BPD was established in September 2000 and was running from Al Ghuriar University Campus in Sheik Zayed road when we first came to UAE. Then BPD was shifted to knowledge village in sept 2004 and atlast to International city in Sept’ 2007 where they have their own campus in almost five acres of land.
