The great thinkers spread ideas of democracy and freedom
with a view to establishing a global welfare society. But when applied to life by neo politicians, the great ideas gave rise to corruption, division of society causing negative growth. People of different nationalities refer to our country - India as one of the finest bounties which mother earth could have ever received. It is acknowledged for its ever lasting traditions, tolerance, widespread culture, finest cuisine and of course 1 of the most prominent factors……India is home to one of the largest democracies in the world. But then if we put a second thought to it, what has India really achieved in these 62 years of independence? Nowadays we hear the famous slogan 'INDIA SHINING' which is an indication of the fact that India is a developing country in all means and is going 2 turn into a superpower in the next few years. But then, how can the government think of a superpower when its basic pillar of democracy has still not been established. We have heard the proverb that 'birds don't foul their own nest'. Then why do we try to foul our motherland? A peak into all the metropolitan cities reveals our true state of disaster……..home for poverty, unhygienic living conditions, corruption, crime, bribery, dirty politics, badly knit judiciary, discrimination against women, hurdles against empowerment of the backward, unfaithful law enforcers and many more at one side and politicians boasting Z+ category security, thousands of Ambanees on he other side . Is this what we call democracy? It can be basically explained in three phrases: 'for the people' 'of the people' and 'by the people' and do any of these factual descriptions that I had earlier mentioned speak optimistically about our country. Stuff like poverty has been persistent in our country right from the age of British rule. Even though every government introduced a number of schemes to empower the poor, the end result has always been the same "the poor remains ever poor". Why not? Because most part of the fund which is raised for these causes are basically LOST ON THE WAY which when decoded means that most of the money goes into the middle men's pocket which includes politicians. This, my dear friends is a perfect example of corruption and due to these India is ranked No1 in the list of most corrupted countries. Let me come on to another sphere of democracy. It provides equality among the citizens and racism, a democratic government is expected not to support any specific religion, and people should have the liberty to practice, profess and propagate any religion they like. If that is the case then why does India boast about its democracy even when communal riots takes place, on every now and then, the most infamous being the Gujarat riots of 2006. This grudge between people of different religions also leads to widespread terrorism with which the government hasn't been able to cope up with. Examples are that of militant groups of various religions, which try to fight for their religion, Jihad being specific. Then if we take the case of the relation of religion with politics we find that some of the prominent political parties favour specific religions in order to create what is called a vote bank. All Indian political parties favour certain religion directly or indirectly for their political mileage. After all the "Kursi" is what wields power and the power hungry lot will adopt any unethical means grab it. Who is bothered about the mother land. If you have power you are respected be it money or muzzle. Gandhiji once said that 'religion can never be separated from politics'. What he meant to say was that, people from all walks of life should take inspiration from the morals which are provided from religions and not to use it for any kind of immoral purposes. But if this is the situation in our country, how can we call ourselves a democracy? Lets move about another sphere of democracy which improves the quality of life of the people. A democratic government ensures and helps in maintaining and increasing the DIGNITY of the individual. The basic dignity arises from leading a comfortable life and this life is achieved by having a satisfying income. But then, what can we say about our country whose 2/3 of the population is living in utter poverty. According to a census conducted in 2006 the per capita income or the average income of an Indian was found out to be Rs28000 compared to the deadline or the deciding line of Rs35000 which categorized countries as developed and underdeveloped. This truly is a very tragic situation. If basic amenities required for daily life cannot be afforded by the people, then what is the use of democratic rights? These things which I have mentioned have been clearly understood by the famous and talented director Danny Boyle inspiring him to make the Oscar winning movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. It depicts the mundane life of the poor Mumbaikars. The movie gives us the basic impression of our present-day-government and its senseless and inefficient bureaucrats working, whose consequences the people have to of-course suffer. But since cultivating optimism is the best option which Danny Boyle knew very well, he added a tinge of happiness to the movie. It showed us that despite the sufferings they (the poor) suffer and despite the hostile governmental decisions they have to face, they live quite a happy and joyous life. Let me give an example my dear friends. Where else in any part of the world would you find a whole family riding a Bajaj scooter other than in India where people consider a mere scooter as a luxurious SUV. We sure do have a lot of resources and Indians are also quite resourceful; that's the reason why most of the multi national companies prefer Indians to work in their firms. We have the largest milk production in the world and also we have a appreciable hold in wheat, rice, fertilizer, jute products etc. and soon we are also going to be added in the G-8 countries. But all is not well in India as recent incidents reveal; The billion-dollar scandal involving software company Satyam Computer Services, and the shocking findings of environmental degradation recently released by Joakim Larsson, a research scientist from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, reveal how corruption prevails in India, despite all it has achieved in the past six decades. The only silver line I see, is the young generation, they have started thinking differently, fed up with dirty politics, want educated lot to think and understand these problems we face and try to reinstate the glory of our great nation, India, that our constitution makers knew and all can be proud of. What they basically have to know, is the means to bridge the increasing divide between the classic haves and have-nots. Dear friends we need to work together hand in hand to bridge this gap. Wipe out the pot bellied corrupt politicians, and bureaucrats who are seen as the impediments to progress. Reinstate accountability in every sphere of life. This is the only solution for the political and democratic instability that India is facing now. As Alfred E. Smith had once said: 'all the ills of democracy can be cured by more democracy' JAI HIND |
