Prof. D Thankamoney, former Head of Dept, Environmental Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering, CET seen with Prof. Sugathakumari.

Accacia is considered the undeclared official tree of the CET campus. Has any one counted how many Acacia trees are there in the campus?

There was a team of dedicated volunteers headed by prof Thankamoney which made a head count of not just the individual Acacia trees , but ALL the trees!!

They didn't stop at that. They went on to count all the birds in the campus..and then all the butterflies…..

The data thus collected has been catalogued in the form of books.. .

Trees of College of Engineering lists all the trees with their botanical name, vernacular name , common name and the total number of trees within the campus.

Acacia trees ( Acacia auriculiformis ) numbered 892 at the time of publishing the book!!!

68 Mango trees, 67 Cashew trees, and 49 coconut trees..

Similarly, even more painstakingly the types and varieties of butterlfies are documented in a book  "Flying Jewels of Our Campus" .  Prof. Thankamoney and her team in 2007 came up with this well researched book whith several photographs and descriptions of the various types of winged beauties.

Feathered Friends of the campus , is the outcome of several years of research on the birds that frequent the CET campus.

Prof. Thankamoney's works have been recognised in various levels of society and Government and she and her team were rewarded with various awards: Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra award in 2002, "palathulli Award in 2006, 'vanamithra Award ' in 2007 'Gandhi Darshan Vrikshamitra Award ' in 2006.. the list goes on.
